Google Adds Deep Links To Search Results

September 28th, 2009 Online Marketing Advisors

On Friday Google announced a new feature that will allow users faster access directly to parts of a larger web page. Users can now navigate directly to the relevant section instead of scrolling through the page to find the information they want to know about. Google says that the links are auto generated and that they can be displayed for any site. These links can not be paid for but there are some things that you can do to your site to help get them displayed.

  1. If you have a page with multiple topics make sure that each topic is broken into sections and that the page is well structured.
  2. Make sure that each section uses your keywords as the anchor, this is best because the links will only show up on relevant search queries so you want to make sure that you are giving your page the best chance possible to get listed.
  3. Also be sure that you have a table of contents which links to the individual anchors, the table of contents should be at the top of your page.
  4. I would also recommend that you take advantage of this by using the H tags (h1, h2 ect.) for each section on the page.

Keep in mind that these are new links and not some addition to the Google site links which you see under certain website in the google search results. Sitelinks are links to additional pages in the website which Google feels might be helpful for the user. Whereas the deep links are links which point to a certain section on a webpage. They might look the same but they are in fact different. For more information about this new snippet from Google you can check out the Official Google Blog.

As always, thanks for reading.
