It seems like every time I check the news Google has come out with some new product. Will these guys ever stop? Most likely not, but anyway. Today Google officially announced Google TV at its Google I/O conference. At first I thought this was a little silly for them do but the more I look at it the more it makes sense. After all, it is alot easier to find stuff on the web then it is using your cable box. Google says that Google TV is not meant to replace your cable or satellite box, but work alongside it. I guess that is a relief for now, but you can bet that Google TV will find a way to compete, that’s just what they do. With companies like Logitech, Intel and Sony hooking up with Google TV to make this happen I’m sure we are going to see pretty nice devices to go along with the Google TV interface.

I must admit that I’m a little excited about this, it is going to be fun to search on the screen for some cool shows to watch or maybe even of your favorite old school movies. Either way we will keep you up to date on the latest with this Google thing. As always thanks for reading and come back soon.

Microsoft is set to release Silverlight 4, the company’s alternative to Adobe Flash. Microsoft will be holding a launch event April 13. The release is biggest for developers who want to create Silverlight apps. Since the release of Silverlight 3 in July, Microsoft has been pushing the platform not just as a video player, but as an application runtime. In fact, Microsoft is making Silverlight a main platform for Windows Phone 7 apps.

At 8:00 AM PST Scott Guthrie will deliver a keynote address for the DevConnections conference being held in Las Vegas, NV. Scott will provide updates on the progress made in Silverlight 4 and will provide the details of availability of the developer tools, runtime and other news. After the keynote, Channel 9 will be hosting interviews with Scott and other key members of the Silverlight and Expression teams. I’ll be hosting one of those interviews as well and look forward to your submitted questions via Twitter to @ch9live. Get the full details.

Some of you may or may not have heard of PubSubHubbub (PuSH) which was developed by Google. I know, the name is crazy ant it. The question is what the heck is it, and what does it do? The video below provides some in depth detail about the technology but in short it means “A simple, open, server-to-server web-hook-based pubsub (publish/subscribe) protocol as an extension to Atom and RSS.”

Check out the video below or visit http://code.google.com/p/pubsubhubbub/ to learn more.

Now rumor has it that Google plans to use PuSH for indexing the web instead of the crawling of links which has been the way search engines have indexed the web for years. If this happens it would be huge for some of the smaller websites since these sites are not often visited by Google. PuSH would allow these smaller sites to get their content indexed the second they publish it.

No one expects PuSH to replace crawling, after all Google still would need to crawl the web in order to find feeds to subscribe to, but it sure would make their job alot easier.

Now this is of course just a rumor, but from what others are saying across the web it looks like this will happen sometime soon. You can check out Read Write Web for the complete story regarding this rumor. Either way we’ll keep you posted as more news comes out. As always, thanks for reading and check back soon.

Starting in June of 2010 Microsoft will start selling their new Office 2010 program, with prices ranging from $100 to $500. The biggest change is that buyers can pay less by forgoing the full boxed copy in favor of a card with only a product key code. Office 2010 will mark the debut of free online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, which will work in popular web browsers (Windows Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari) but not in the Opera browser. Microsoft will offer the following 4 versions of the program:

Office Home and Student
$149 ($119 key card)
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote

Office Home and Business
$279 ($199 key card)
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook

Office Professional
$499 ($349 key card)
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, Access

Office Professional Academic
$99 (no key card)
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, Access

Microsoft also noted that it has now reached more than 2 million downloads of the beta version of Office 2010. The academic version of Office Professional for students and educators will sell for $99 and will be available at campus bookstores and through certain retailers. All versions of Office 2010 will include access to Office Web, which is a pared down, Internet-based version of the software. Microsoft also plans to make Office Web available for free to the public through its Windows Live portal.

Tuesday night Peter Wilson gave a 5 minute presentation on the battle between Google and Microsoft during Ignite Seattle 8. Peter says that Microsoft has focused more on platforms while Google has focused more on applications. He says that Microsoft is trying to catch up to Google in the app race since they have such a large lead.

I find this to be an interesting battle, Microsoft has been on top for awhile and Google is still growing at a pretty fast rate. I guess the main question is “Can both companies come out on the winning side”? We’ll be keeping an eye on this race and can’t wait to see how things play out in the future. As always, thanks for reading.

Yesterday Apple announced that developers have created over 100,000 apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. This is an outstanding number considering that it only took Apple 2 years to reach this point. With over 10,000 downloads a day worldwide Apple is clearly leading the way when it comes to apps thus making it the largest applications store in the world.

Microsoft launched with about 240 apps and now has around 20,000 available for Windows Mobile, but this is no where near the number that Apple has put out on the market. Microsoft does plan to announce further news next week about the Windows Martketplace for Mobile. In the meantime it looks like Apple will keep leading way.

There are a few complaints however but nothing major, some are displeased with the fact that the Apple Store only shows 20 apps in any given category. I find this a little a troubling, I mean with a 100,000 apps to chose from a person really needs to know what they are looking for in order to find something that will be suitable for them to use. In either case this is great news for Apple and show the dedication that have towards this market. You can get the full run down by visiting this page Apple Announces Over 100,000 Apps Now Available on the App Store.
The 2009 Space Elevator Conference, being held at the Microsoft Conference Center in Redmond, Washington, begins this week. Hundreds of scientists, researchers, and space enthusiasts from all over the world will gather together and brainstorm about the challenges of building an elevator to space.

When I first heard about this idea I thought is was rather silly, after all, what would be the purpose of having an elevator that goes all the way up into space? Of course I am not a science geek and therefore do not fully understand all of the ends and outs or even the benefits that come with it. But according to David Horn “The big factor that could potentially change the world is that it would reduce the access cost to space,” he says. “Instead of paying US$10,000 a pound to put something into orbit with a rocket, you could reduce that cost to $100 a pound or less.”

The thing that has impressed me the most is a fairly new technology called carbon nanotubes which is thinner then a strand of hair and stronger than steel. As I said earlier, this is really beyond my understanding but I wanted to post on it and get your thoughts about this. It looks like the guys at Microsoft as well as others around the world are in fact serious about building this elevator. The question is will ever become a reality? If you would like to learn more about The Space Elevator Conference you can visit the official site at http://www.spaceelevatorconference.org/ for all the details and information.

Thanks for reading.
