On Friday Google announced a new feature that will allow users faster access directly to parts of a larger web page. Users can now navigate directly to the relevant section instead of scrolling through the page to find the information they want to know about. Google says that the links are auto generated and that they can be displayed for any site. These links can not be paid for but there are some things that you can do to your site to help get them displayed.
If you have a page with multiple topics make sure that each topic is broken into sections and that the page is well structured.
Make sure that each section uses your keywords as the anchor, this is best because the links will only show up on relevant search queries so you want to make sure that you are giving your page the best chance possible to get listed. Read more…
Google has just released a new plugin to the google toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer which will allow you to post a comment on any webpage on the internet. Although this idea has been tried before by other web browsers, Google plans to use an algorithm that will rank comments by quality and then link those comments to a user’s Google Profile. Now of course the first thing most spammers will try to do with this is find a way to abuse it, but Google Sidewiki will feature an algorithm that can filter out obvious spam and other techniques used by those who like to try and trick the search engines. Only Google Toolbar users will be able to see the comments on the Web page, but Google plans to work on an API that will allow developers to use Sidewiki in other places.
For those who are everyday bloggers this article will be nothing new to them, but for those who are just starting out you may find this information helpful. Just what is blogging for search traffic anyway? This has a fairly simple answer, all this really means is that your blog post are meant to do two things. 1: Rank in the search engines, and 2: Turn those rankings into traffic. That sounds easy enough right? Well creating the article is the easy part, ranking in the search engines is another matter. With some careful planing you could rank pretty well but it all depends on how you target your keywords. The trick to ranking well is to be the first one to blog about a certain topic, for example the other day I did an article on the owners of My Therapy Journal the reason for this was because I like what they are doing, the other was I that I was pretty sure that after these guys got their few minutes of fame from the t.v. show Shark Tank their search numbers would be up. Within 5 minutes of posting the article it was ranked #3 for the keyword My Therapy Journal, and the traffic I got from it was pretty darn good. Now of course I did not receive any sales or new clients from this but that was not the point of posting the article, again the point was to produce more traffic to my site.
In my mind all traffic is good traffic no matter where it comes from, the more I can get the better it will be for the site. I’m sure the main question here is how do you get your article to rank so fast for those type of keywords? I’ll never tell, just kidding. The answer to this one is not that easy, but here are a few tips that should help when you are posting your articles. Read more…
What an amazing game yesterday. If I was a Trojan fan I would most defiantly be feeling sick to the stomach right now. Clearly no one thought this would happen, the Trojans have been a power house for awhile now, but the fact is the Huskies was able to pull this off with a winning field goal with 3 seconds left in the game . I guess all good things do come to an end, after all we have lost 7 games in a row to these guys so it is about time we were able to snatch one from them.
So I guess the question is do the Huskies now have a coach who might be able to lead them back to the promise land? Well so far so good, hopefully they can keep the momentum going into next weeks game. Next week the Huskies will face Standford another one of their PAC-10 rivals. Now course I am not a sports writer, but I like to talk about the games from time to time, plus this is fresh content so why not. If you want all of the details about yesterdays game then you can check out this article (Huskies Upset #3 USC) from the Seattle Times. As always thanks reading.
It seems that web directories will never die, every day new ones pop up all over the internet. Sadly most of these will fall by the wayside, but this will not stop people from wanting to create them. The are alot of things one needs to before trying to start a directory. For example, there are some who would prefer to buy a dropped domain which already has page rank and then try to bank on that. Don’t go this route, at least not if you are serious about creating a directory that will last over the years. You are better off choosing a brand name that webmasters will remember instead of just coming up with a random domain.
Another factor you will want to consider is the type of directory you want to create. Do you just want to create a general directory that will be open to all websites? What about one that targets a specific niche or product? The possibilities are endless and there is still room for more. With some careful planing and a descent budget there is no reason why you directory can not be successful. I’m not saying that it will be easy, it takes time but it can work if done correctly. So keep those things in mind before you move forward.
With that said, I liked to point you to an article which will guide you in the right direction if you chose to start your own web directory. “How to Start Your Own Web Directory” from Hubpages. As always, thanks for reading.
I know alot of people are not fond of the WNBA but what can I say, I like it. Being from Seattle naturally I’m a Seattle Storm fan just as I am a fan of all the other Seattle teams. However, last night was another disappointing lose for the Storm in the first round of the playoffs as they lost to the L.A. Sparks 63-70. It seems they just can’t get over the hump when it comes playoff time. Ever since we won the title in 2004 things just haven’t been working out. Being knocked out of the first round every time they hit the playoffs is just not a good sign of where the team is headed. Most would blame the fact that it is because Lauren Jackson has been out for so long. This might be the case to some degree but the Storm still have a pretty strong team when she is not available.
Either way, it’s time for the girls to dig deep and find a way to pull this off. Game 2 will be Friday at 7:00 pm at the KeyArena in Seattle. In order for the Storm to win the girls on the bench are going to have to step up their game a little. I’ll be checking them out tomorrow and hopefully we can tie this thing up, other wise we’ll be looking towards the next season. As always, thanks for reading.
I’ve been meaning to write something on this plugin so now is a good time to do it. If you have recently moved your blog over from a different site and need an easy way to redirect your old pages to the new site then you might find this wordpress plugin useful. The Redirection Plugin from Urban Giraffe is a great way to redirect all of your pages. It is very easy to use and does not require any major skills to use it. Just simply type in the name of the page you want to redirect and then type in the name of the page you to redirect it to and hit save and it’s done, pretty cool huh.
This plugin was helpful for this site because there was an issue with wordpress and uppercase url extensions. It appeared that wordpress would not read the normal 301 via the htaccess file. This plugin solved that issue for us and we were able to move all of our old pages over to the new ones. Now it is just a matter time for google to pick up the changes and all should be well. I highly recommend this plugin if you are looking for a way to redirect pages using wordpress. As always thanks for reading.
If any of you watched last nights episode of “Shark Tank” then you most likely saw the section where 2 guys present an internet therapy site and wanted 80k with a 20% stake in the company (you can view their presentation here just fast forward to minute 30). First off I want to say that I thought these guys gave one hell of a presentation for their My Therapy Journal website. I also think that their idea and site is pretty darn good too. Although I have to say that their service is most likely not for everyone, but it is unique. Their site allows you to create a private diary to store your personal daily thoughts and feelings in a secure environment. The site also features a Progress Graph™ which tracks the way you have been feeling over time. Again, not a bad idea if you like to write alot and keep a daily dairy.
But on to the deal that they made in the show. Read more…
If you browse the internet alot then you really can’t help but notice all the spam that is floating around out there. Most of the sites are the ones just looking to make a quick buck off viagra or some other quick buck scam. It’s a really sad story that there is so much of this stuff out there, but what is alot more sad is to see to the local search results flooded with duplicate listings. You would think that google would have this under control by now, but from the looks of things it just keeps getting worse and worse. I understand that some seo companies are trying to do what ever they can to get traffic and potential clients but putting 2 or 3 listings in every local search is going a little over board right?.
I talk to alot of people who either own a business or is thinking about starting one. It still amazes me how some companies really feel that they do not need to have a presence online. The justification for not pushing their business online is always that they are happy with the way things are going now. That’s great, if a business is already doing well without online marketing then what is the point of trying to get them to start? After all, word of mouth is still the most powerful form of advertising you can get, so what makes online marketing so important for a business who may not need it? Well, the answer is that although your business may doing good today without online marketing this may not be the case in the future. As a business owner you have to realize that times are changing and they are changing at a speed which is leaving most businesses in the stone age. More and more local companies are going out of business due to the fact that they refuse to change with the times. Read more…
